A PLAY that depicts Jesus as a gay man who is seduced by Judas and conducts a gay marriage for two apostles has been condemned by religious leaders as it prepares to open in Sydney.

The Anglican Bishop of South Sydney, Robert Forsyth, questioned the integrity of Corpus Christi and expressed his outrage at the "unhistorical and untrue" depiction of the son of God and some of his disciples as homosexual.

"It is deliberately, not innocently, offensive and they're obviously having a laugh about it," he said.

"It's historical nonsense and I wouldn't want to go and see it. Life's too short."

Australian Family Association spokeswoman Angela Conway said the play's creators had committed "a big enough crime" by neglecting to treat Christianity and Christian believers with more sensitivity.

"The ideas are offensive and really border on blasphemous. It's just completely fanciful and self-obsessive," she said.

The play's director, Leigh Rowney, is unrepentant. "I would be surprised if people bothered to protest outside the New Theatre … but if they did, bring it on," Rowney said.

The play, which will open at the New Theatre in Newtown on February 7 as part of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, provoked protests and bomb threats in the US. Death threats were sent to playwright Terrence McNally, who draws parallels between the rejection he faced as a young gay man growing up in Texas and Christ's persecution.

Rowney, a Christian, denied the play mocked Christ but said it would upset some Christians.

"I think it humanises Him in a way Christians might find difficult because we like to believe God and the son of God are ultimately divine and above all of us.

"I wanted this play in the hands of a Christian person like myself to give it dignity but still open it up to answering questions about Christianity as a faith system."

MOVIE: PS I LOVE YOU (3 1/2 *)

I honestly don't think that there was a dry eye in the cinema last night, when we went to see this film. There are sections that are definitely Hallmarky - other sections that definitely pull at the heart strings ... I sobbed, laughed and smiled all at the one time.  - maybe 3.5 or 4 out of 5.

Teachers split over 3-year pay deal

[-] Text [ +]

LONDON (Reuters) - Teachers were divided over a three-year pay deal announced by the government on Tuesday, with some saying it would worsen recruitment problems to the profession while others welcomed it.

Salaries will rise by 2.45 percent from September 2008 and by 2.3 percent from September 2009 and 2010, schools secretary Ed Balls said in a statement.

The 2.45 percent rise is higher than government's targeted Consumer Prices Index inflation rate of about 2 percent, although it is lower than the Retail Price Index -- at present 4 percent -- on which most private sector pay deals are based.

The National Union of Teachers criticised the announcement, saying many of its members would be worse off.

But the NASUWT union and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers said the award meant teachers had done better than other public sector workers.

The head teachers' union, the Association of School and College Leaders said it had already approved the deal.

The 2009 and 2010 pay awards -- recommended by the School Teachers' Review Body -- will be subject to a review of recruitment data and economic conditions but Balls said he did not expect the awards to change.

"I very much welcome the framework of predictability that these three-year recommendations will give, which will assist long-term strategic decision-making by local authorities and schools," Balls said.

"I believe this pay award, the first of the government's three-year, forward-looking, public sector pay awards, is fair for teachers and affordable for schools," he argued.

But National Union of Teachers General Secretary, Steve Sinnott, said: "this pay settlement of 2.45 percent for 2008 is well below the rate of inflation of 4 percent, which was also announced today.

"This will reduce the standard of living for teachers and exacerbate the problems of recruitment and retention.

"Teachers have to pay increases in the cost of housing, fuel and food. This settlement is in effect a pay cut."

A breakfast quickie....

She is in the kitchen preparing to boil eggs for breakfast. He walks in. She turns and says, "You've got to make love to me this very moment."His eyes light up and he thinks, This is my lucky day.
Not wanting to lose the moment, he embraces her and then gives it his all on the kitchen table. Afterwards she says, "Thanks," and returns to the stove. More than a little puzzled, he asks, "What was that all about?"

She explains, "The egg timer's broken."

How I use my Treo: My Right Hand Pal

I was published on a site giving away a free macbook --- let's see if I will come through as a winner ... mind you everyone is published ;)

[From Jordi Major, Australia] Hi, My name is Jordi Major, I am an Australian 32 y/o secondary school teacher living and working in London, UK. I use my Palm Treo 650 everyday for various purposes. As a phone I am able to use it for SMS and normal phonecalls. I use the treo to hold my personal details as well as being able to take advantage of the office sharing facilities to keep student results at hand and whilst traveling. As an avid traveler I use the various functions such as world clock which can be set for the times in 'local' time zone - including the transfer of all flight and accommodation details which are transferred from my PC's digital calendar.

Entertainment wise, I listen to MP3 whilst playing my favourite games such as tetris. I use the many various programs available for the Palm which assist with organisation of my personal affairs. Having traveled through the world, I have been able to connect to the internet via the bluetooth feature as a remote modem for the computers I have been connected to. The use of GPRS has also assisted with locating local restaurants, hotels, supermarkets using googlemaps when in a foreign city or town.

With bluetooth handsfree and connecting GPS, my treo sits in front of me in the car everytime I travel. If it wasnt for my Treo I would have been lost many a time trying to navigate the streets of London and also would not have been able to navigate Eastern Europe as I have the installed TomTom maps as my navigator. Writing this passage has allowed me to focus on just how often and how much I use the Treo in my day to day life. It certainly has become a fantastic extension to my hand. It's also a great way to reduce the amount of 'paper' resources in the world. I now no longer need to carry MP3 player, nor diaries, nor workbooks and on the occasions where lighting has been correct - even the camera has come in handy when in situations that a photo needs to be shot. I have taken many a photo of furniture and building supplies in the process of renovations of my new apartment.
